Will You Be Impacted by the Turkey eSIM Block? What Travelers Should Know
In this article

Those who have visited Turkey know that it’s one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It has a rich mix of history, natural wonders, and vibrant cities.

So, it shouldn’t be surprising to know that Turkey saw 63.92 million tourists in 2025.

But not everything is sunshine and roses.

There has been news that eSIMs are banned in Turkey and that you cannot use them if you’re visiting the country.

Is there any truth in that news? Let’s find out!

What is the Turkey eSIM Block All About?

To clear things up, eSIMs aren’t “banned” in Turkey. You can still use your eSIM plan and device in Turkey.

But the websites and mobile applications that sell these travel eSIMs are blocked.

This move was triggered by an order from the BTK (Information and Communication Technologies Authority of Turkey). The order has restricted access to websites of popular travel eSIM providers. This means that you will be unable to activate your Turkey eSIM after landing in the country.

The List of eSIM Providers Blocked in Turkey

The BTK has blocked the following travel eSIM providers in Turkey:

1. Airalo

2. Holafly

3. Saily

4. Nomad

5. Instabridge

6. Flexiroam

7. Mobimatter

8. Airhub

9. Roamless

10. Alosim

11. Global eSIM

12. Holiday eSIM

13. BNESIM

Residents and tourists alike will not have access to the websites and mobile apps of the eSIM providers mentioned above. They might have to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or change DNS (Domain Name System) to access these websites. However, Turkey might strengthen its VPN protocols to restrict these workarounds.

The Impact of the eSIM Block

The blocking of eSIM websites and apps in Turkey impacts the residents more than the tourists.

With the websites blocked, locals cannot purchase and set up an eSIM before they leave the country. This puts them in a tricky situation where they have to purchase and activate an eSIM after they land in the destination country. It’s either that or they’ll have to purchase expensive roaming plans.

As for tourists, the eSIM block prevents them from purchasing new plans or topping up existing plans. They also cannot troubleshoot their eSIMs if they run into any issues.

Why Has the Turkish Government Blocked eSIM Websites?

There are numerous angles on the reason behind the block. Some of the more common ones include

1. Prioritizing Turkish mobile operators over foreign ones Compliance with Turkish regulations.

2. Storage of user data within Turkey.

3. Preventing users from permanently roaming on foreign networks.

4. Regardless, the block has been in full effect and is unlikely to be reverted in the future.

How to Stay Connected in Turkey

Since eSIMs are blocked, you have three different ways to stay connected in Turkey. Note that some of these three methods might be comparatively more expensive than using a travel eSIM.

Roaming Plan: You could simply purchase a roaming plan from your current operator. A roaming plan might get your discounted rates for calls, texts, and data or a set amount of these benefits for a price. This is one of the more expensive options in this list.

Local SIM Card: Buying a local SIM card in Turkey is also one of the recommended methods. You’ll have to present your passport to purchase a local SIM card that offers mobile services for a set time period. Some operators may charge an activation fee as well. Another point to note is that, if you plan to stay in Turkey for more than 120 days, then you will have to register your device’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) for a fee of 54,258 Turkish lira (approx. $1,263) to use mobile services.

Free Wi-Fi: Many public places in Turkey, like restaurants, airports, and cafes, offer free Wi-Fi. These are sufficient for basic browsing and texting. That said, public Wi-Fi may not be a safe option, and speeds are fully dependent on the number of users connected to the network.

How to counter the eSIM Block

As scary and inconvenient as the eSIM block sounds, there is a workaround for it.

Most tourists purchase an eSIM after they have landed in the destination. But for Turkey, it’s going to be a bit different.

You’ll have to purchase and activate the eSIM in your home country itself. eSIMs that are activated outside Turkey will work without issues.

However, you’re still stranded in terms of topping up and troubleshooting. But a VPN or a change in DNS might solve this.

After activation, look for confirmation that the eSIM is functional as well.

Final Thoughts

Blocking eSIM websites in Turkey is a massive inconvenience to anyone who’s visiting the country.

Although workarounds exist, things can take a turn for the worse, especially if you run out of data or need assistance with your plan.

But don’t let the mobile restrictions discourage you from visiting the country. Turkey has a lot of things to see and do, and with the right precautions, you too can have a wonderful trip.
